What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the surgery that modifies the shape of the nose. This surgery can increase, reduce or change its structure, tip or bridge, narrow or widen the nostrils. It also corrects trauma, congenital problems and breathing difficulties.

Many patients who seek this surgical treatment do so because they are unhappy with the appearance of their nose, often due to the dorsal hump or having a nose that is too wide.

What is the anatomy of the nose like?

Nasal anatomy is quite complex. The patient typically thinks of it as simply the visible part of the nose. In reality, it is a cavity as deep and wide as the mouth, with interconnections to many other systems. However, for practical purposes, the external nose can be considered a pyramid-shaped structure, primarily consisting of a bony skeleton and a cartilaginous one. The bony skeleton is mainly formed by the nasal bones in the upper part, which are articulated to the frontal bone above and to the upper jaw below. The cartilaginous skeleton is formed by the lateral nasal cartilages. Another fundamental structure in maintaining nasal shape and function is the nasal septum, which consists of both a bony and a cartilaginous part.

What is the dorsal hump?

The dorsal hump is the bone that protrudes from the bridge of the nose, resembling a bump. When a patient comes for a consultation about this, it is because they are uncomfortable with their profile.

The dorsal hump can be predominantly bony. The nasal bridge is not a simple issue to address, which is why at the Munoz-Carinanos Institute we recommend consulting a specialist experienced in performing this type of surgery.

Below we show images provided by our patients whose rhinoplasty has yielded remarkable results.

Dorsal hump rhinoplasty before and after

In the «Yo Medico» (I Am a Doctor) programme on Canal Sur, linked below, you can see how dorsal hump surgery is performed successfully on one of our patients.

How can a wide nose be modified?

This is another question our patients frequently ask during consultations, as they are not satisfied with their nose. In this case, the cartilaginous skeleton comes into play, formed by the lateral nasal cartilages and the nasal tip.

In the following images, we show the results of wide nose surgery, where you can appreciate the excellent surgical outcome.
